Instead, incorporate your accomplishments and what value you added to the job description. Examples: cost savings of $x, meeting deadlines on time or ahead of schedule, implementing processes or procedures etc. What makes you different or unique?

3. Dates – Double check your dates to be sure they are accurate on your resume. Do not lie or misrepresent this in any way. It will cost you the job or offer. Using months and years are preferred.

4. Education – Clarify if you are degreed or ‘in process’ taking classes, note your major/minor and if you have a strong GPA consider including that as well.

5. Objective – Consider omitting the objective and replacing it with a summary or overview that sums up your experience and value added. Remember to keep this objective and factual, written in third person.

6. Customizing – Always review your resume before sending it to a company. If you know you are a fit for the role, your resume has to read that you can do the job. You may have to edit your resume to fit a job and ensure a call. Do not assume the person reading your resume knows what you do because of your job title. Remember an employer is looking to see what you can do for them!

7. Industry Terms/Acronyms – Each company/industry has terms/acronyms that are unique. Spell out the acronym first and define it if needed. For example if you are running a proprietary software database write that vs. just INLEX CRM. Do not miss an opportunity to link your skills and experience to the job description. Do not get lost in translation!

8. Approach – Write your resume for the job you want not the job you have. The resume is the vehicle to get you the interview the interview is what will get you the job.

9. Style – In today’s market the competition is fierce, making a well crafted resume is even more important. It should be easy to read locate skills, catch the attention of the reader and say “Pick Me.” Consider Bullets that begin with Action Verbs that explain your experience, most important/significant at the top. Add a skills section that pulls out keywords explaining your industry skills/exposure.

10. Spelling/Grammar – This is your first impression to potential employer. Grammatical errors, spacing, word use, spelling all are the most common mistakes on a resume. If you want to stand out don’t rely of spell/grammar check, get a second person’s opinion!

Be a FAN on Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/KanePartners

Follow us Twitter:
http://www.twitter.com/KanePartners
http://www.twitter.com/KaneJobs

Read Our Blogs:
http://kanepartners.wordpress.com
http://kanepartners.blogspot.com

NBC10 BLOG POST by Kristin Kane of Kane Partners

"Job Seekers: Not getting the Callback/Interview"
By: Kristin Kane, Kane Partners Staffing Solutions

Today’s economic climate has had a huge impact on many people’s job search often leaving them with frustration and little results. With fewer jobs available and stiffer competition, many people asking the question… WHY? Why have I not received an interview or even a call back? I don’t get it… I can do the job!

Evaluating the question “WHY” is something every job seeker should do, especially in today’s economy. First one has to keep in mind the ‘job market’ has shifted, more people, less jobs which means you may/should have to change your strategy. Many job seekers have kept the same routine for job hunting and are expecting the same results as a few years ago.

Most people are equipped with a current resume, which is usually well written and aesthetically pleasing with only minor mistakes, spelling or grammatical. Unfortunately, the problem is the resume lacks real content, the key component to getting a call/interview. The ‘content’ is unique to each job seeker and a cookie cutter approach to a resume might not be the best strategy. A resume is not just your ‘job description’ but should include how you added value to the job. A well written resume may include: accomplishments, awards, cost saving measures, special projects, and/or what distinguishes you from the competition.

For those that are still not getting the call/interview… what now? First, I would suggest you pull up the job description and your resume. Does your resume actually say that you can do the job on paper? If not, this may be why you have not received a call. You do not appear qualified. Each company is looking for something different and you can’t assume they know you have done something because of your title. Be careful. There is a fine line between to much and not enough on your resume. Never lie or exaggerate on a resume. If you don’t have something do not put it. It’s grounds for immediate disqualification. Not sure how to phrase it, consult a professional. If you are applying to more then one type of job you should have more then one type of resume. It is the resume that will get you the interview or call back. If you haven’t spent the time or addressed what the company is looking for, especially in today’s economy, chances are you will end up in the ‘pass’ file.

Thanks to NBC10 I had the opportunity to help a job seeker, Alessandro, in a similar situation. It wasn’t until we actually sat down and went over his resume and the jobs he was applying to that we found what was missing. Go to AS SEEN ON NBC10 to view the story of Alessandro. Hopefully this will show job seekers a little elbow grease and editing of a resume can go a long way, especially in today’s economy! If you are having a similar problem or not sure why you might not be getting the call, help is out there. The current economy has slowed the hiring process and with the high unemployment rate the number of applicants has increased, therefore companies are slower to hire and more selective with a larger candidate pool. Remain positive and don’t be afraid to change your tactics to get seen.

As I like to say, it’s your resume that will get you the interview and the interview is what will get you the job. Your time and efforts should be invested in the resume!

Submitted by: Kristin Kane, Kane Partners LLC| www.kanepartners.net
July 14, 2009, 12:15pm

NBC10 Career Resources

Thanks for watching or planning to watch Tracy Davidson's NBC10 Survive and Thrive spotlight. A few tips on how to approach your search:

1. Update your resume!
2. Apply to jobs that you are qualified for, do not apply everywhere. If you are looking for a career change write that in your cover letter, but make sure your resume is tailored to your relevant strengths of your career.
3. Track the company, job title and date you send your resume.
4. If you are working with recruiters ask that you know the company before you have your resume submitted. That will avoid duplicate efforts, this does not look good to the potential employer.
5. Be patient! It takes time to review resumes.
6. Be confident in yourself and your skill sets.
7. Point out your accomplishments and milestones in your career.
8. After an interview send a thank you!
9. Always be positive finding a new career can be job in and of itself. Take your time and remain positive.

Need a Job.... What do you do, who do you turn to?

Call a Recruiter!

1. Call Kane Partners if you specialize in IT, Engineering, Manufacturing/Production, Scientific, Executive/Management. If not research agencies that specialize in your area of experitse that cover the local region you are searching or willing to commute too. Just because an agency isnt in your town or state, does not mean they cant help you.

2. Once you find an agency contact them and send your current resume. Prior to the call make sure you have taken the time to update your resume and have it ready. Dont be afraid to ask if they have any advise or tips to help improve your resume.

3. GRAMMER GRAMMER - you would be suprised how many grammatical errors are on resumes, from spelling to punctuation to word use. Ask someone a family member, friend or neighbor to take a look at your resume, is it clear consise and without error.

4. Agencies are free to YOU! Companies pay the agencies to find the best people on the market, active and passive.

5. They help negotiable salaries and benefits packages, making sure you get the best possible offer with out loosing the deal.

6. They give you the back story of the company, the need, why its open, insight on who will be interviewing you and ultimately what to expect. If you are confused or not sure about an item ask the opinion of a sales associate. By just purchasing clothing that fits can make an inappropriate outfit look very professional! You want to make sure your clothing is not too big (where you are lost or swimming in the shirt/top or pants) and that it is not too tight (where your clothing looks like a second layer of skin).

For men it is important to purchase the proper pant length, the improper length often comes across an unprofessional. It is inexpensive to have your pant legs and jackets lengthen or shortened according to your height. Also when you are in business attire the appropriate sock is a dress sock not athletic socks.

For women skirts should be just at or below your knee, anything more than 2 inches above your knee is inappropriate. Shoes should have at least 3/4 of an inch heel, no flip flops, open toed shoes are acceptable in most cases and a dress sandal usually works in the summer months. A woman's cleavage should be managed at all times, if you choose to wear V-neck or a low cut shirt wear a shell or Cami to minimize your chest exposure. If you choose a top or dress that has spaghetti straps, strapless or a thin straps you should keep a cover-up, jacket or sweater on at all times during work hours, exposed shoulders in a business professional/casual environment is considered inappropriate.

At no time in a business professional/casual are jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, sweatshirts or sweatsuits appropriate, unless it is a stated dress down day.

When attending work, attending a meeting, interview or any other business related function it is important to dress appropriately. Remember to fit the clothing to your body type, stay covered up, tailor clothing if needed, and find a good shoe to fit your attire. Accessories are always a nice addition to any outfit which can include: tie, scarf, handkerchief, jewelry, earrings, or purse. Ladies and gentleman please do not overdo the aftershave/cologne or perfume. In both these cases less can be more, you never want to take anything away from yourself.

This article is meant to be informational and offer basic advise/guidelines to a business enviroment. Show your professionalism in your demeanor, speech, appearance and preparation.

First and foremost you must know your resume and job experience information as if you spoke of it everyday. However, being prepared to answer tougher questions is what will set you apart from other candidates. If you are well prepared, you will exude the confidence you need to get the job. Questions may include such inquiries as:

What qualifies you for the position over other candidates? State the facts without being boastful. Do not speak negatively about other candidates.

Why do you want to work for our company? Research the company and answer by saying how their company attitude would encourage your best work.

What projects have you worked on, what was your input and what were the results? Know the facts.

What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness and how would you overcome it? Talk about your strengths and how they would benefit the company. State how overcoming your weakness is an opportunity for you to improve yourself.

Why are you leaving your current position? State how you are looking for a more challenging career opportunity.

If you had a chance to live your life all over, what one thing would you change? Focus on a key turning point in your life and state how you would have liked that to happen earlier.
Are you interviewing with other companies? If the answer is yes, you do not have to name the other companies. Just let the interviewer know other companies are looking at you without sounding arrogant, but your first choice would be to work for their company.

What courses or seminars have you attended to keep abreast of changes in your industry? Know the latest news in our field.

How have you resolved conflicts with previous co-workers or managers? The interviewer is looking at your ability to handle conflict. When answering this question, do not speak negatively of or blame others. Show your maturity and flexibility by stating how you discussed the problem and how the parties involved came up with a solution.

What are your salary requirements? State your current salary and inform them you would consider any reasonable offer in this range.

Practice your responses to your questions with an impartial party. Take their criticism as a learning experience. Responding correctly and with confidence will be a great advantage to your interview. Speak clearly and concisely. Make your point in as few words as possible. Rambling on or trying to impress your interviewer with complicated explanations will be detrimental.
Complete your interview preparation by dressing appropriately. First impressions for a professional position such as an IT or Engineering job will set the tone for how orderly your work is done. If you are dressed sloppily or too casually, the interviewer will assume you give the same regard to your work.

And most importantly, body language tells more about a person than we realize. Enter and exit the interview with confidence, not arrogance. Sitting straight up, but not stiff, and keeping arms at your side or on your lap shows you are comfortable and open to discussion. Always demonstrate enthusiasm in whatever you say and do.

After each interview, evaluate yourself to learn how you can improve and prepare for future interviews. No matter how often you interview, there is always room for improvement. The bottom line is when you enter an interview, the interviewer’s attitude is “make me want to hire you” and it is your job to make that happen.

Memorial Day Weekend Rainbow Kickoff

Kane Partners is located in a small town called West Point, PA also known with the mailing address of Lansdale, PA. What are the myths and realties of "Social Networking," how do you adjust? How do you get involved and choose the right site that millions that are already utilizing? Karen P. Technology and networking has brought together people with a common interest of networking, meeting new people, sharing ideas and thoughts, both professional and personal in a new virtual world.

Most people are familiar with the Kevin Bacon game of "Six Degrees of Separation" a concept that each person is an average of 6 steps from Kevin Bacon. LinkedIn is the best example of an on-line network to describe this theory. When considering an on-line network or social group there is always an option to join or not to join, to connect or not to connect. For those that choose to join and connect they are building a personal on-line networking community. In doing this, it is suggested you "Nurture your Network" and maintain your contacts, not just use someone for information or a connection and throw away, like a tissue. Think before you accept a connection, make sure you are aware of who you are connecting with, keeping in mind you want to build a workable network. Try not to get caught up in getting the most connections, which can lead to useless or cold connections down the road.

The focus was on three key terms that included: Online Identity, Social Networking and Linked-In.
On-line Identity is described as your web presence that can be both personal and/or professional. Once your information is out there, it can be difficult to have it removed. Those with on-line identities can include anyone with an e-mail address, a log in name and password for a website, bloggers, those with websites of personal/professional, the list continues. Did you ever "Google" yourself? You can manage your on-line identity by limiting or not limiting the information you post or make public.

Social Networking connects those with similar interests in networking topics, a group of personal/professional contacts; it is assumed an on-line network. This is considered an extension of traditional networking. Usually it requires joining a particular group or logging onto a website associated with networking.

LinkedIn is the most well known and professional on-line networking sites. It allows members to search jobs, find old contacts, colleagues or friends and allows members to display professional profiles. This is an easy way to get connected in a non-invasive controlled environment.

There are two general categories for "social networking" either social or professional. Why connect, why join? To reconnect with someone in a non-invasive fashion, to keep in touch with someone or to seek information you may have forgotten about someone. The connection is done via the internet, which helps avoid what could be an awkward phone call. Once the connection is re-established it makes a future call a 'warm' call having a new commonality, your network.

Jason Alba is an author of two popular "Now What" books for LinkedIn and Facebook, excellent resources if you missed this Roundtable. Other notable sites to use in building an online presence include:Business: LinkedIn.com, Spoke.com, ZoomInfo.com. At these sites you can create business profiles, list contact information and business related information. Personal/Social: MySpace, Facebook, Friendster. You can post personal information, picture, chat on 'wall' spaces, usually non-work related.Non-Profits: http://www.wildapricot.com/blogs/newsblog, KIVA.org.

Website vs. Blog: A website is often a static place usually used as an information portal for products or services, coined as 'push marketing'. A blog is a dynamic site that is constantly changing offering a more informal place to post comments, articles or allow customers to make comments and interact in a forum setting. This can be a controlled environment by the Blog owner.

It is becoming more common to see Blogs and Websites used together or linked together as an extension of one another. Blogs often will be seen higher on a Google search, assisting in name recognition through SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

When building your network and social profile there are two tools that can bring information directly to you, called Google Reader and RSS Feeder. You can signup with Google Reader (a free tool/page) to send articles, links and news feeds to one 'landing' site to have information of direct interest to you in one location without having to search each item. You can also subscribe to the RSS Reader which sends updates from websites or blogs, so you don't have to check a site for changes, they come to you! You can link your RSS Reader to Google Reader.
LinkedIn is used by all types of business professionals including Fortune 500. The site is used to network and connect with others and as a recruiting tool. LinkedIn uses degrees of connection: Your Contacts (1st degree), your contacts connections (2nd degree) and their connections which are (3rd degree) from you.

You can use your connections to assist in a warm introduction or to just view profiles. Another common use of LinkedIn is to learn more about a client or prospective client by viewing their profile. What makes LinkedIn unique is the many features offered along with ability to control all aspects of your profile and settings, and set your privacy levels. It is suggested you "brand" yourself with your profile. Select keywords for your summary to set yourself apart from others, creating a unique on-line personality. Most people use LinkedIn's free profile which allows for plenty of networking and available connections. When linking with someone, contacting them first on your own or through a friend might help in securing the connection and avoiding using your 5 free "Invites to Introductions" which comes with the free account. After the 5 are used you can purchase more but you have unlimited "Invite to Connect."

An interesting note: Be careful who you Invite, there are 3 options when someone receives your invite to connect: Accept, I Don't Know and Ignore. If you get 5 "I Don't Knows" you are blocked from your LinkedIn Account as a "Spammer."

When you create your profile remember: ask for recommendations. It is said by on-line experts that you should average 65 connections on LinkedIn to have an effective profile and 10% should provide a recommendation.

Our 2 Part Collaborative Roundtable brought many new faces including an effective Q&A's of how to create and manage profiles. This was an impressive collaboration of minds to help extend our traditional networking to social networking.

We hope to see you on a social networking site soon!

(This article was published in The Collaborative Newsletter of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce in Willow Grove, PA.
