NBC10s Get a Job - "Resume Results"

View more news videos at: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/video.

NBC10's free Resume Results Seminar Tuesday night was packed with people eager to learn how to fine-tune their resumes for the next big job interview. We streamed the event live online and have it posted right here so you can watch and get the same good information. Below, you'll find additional tips by Kristin Kane from Kane Partners Staffing Solutions for building a resume that gets results!

Add a Targeted Profile/Summary in 3rd Person
Starting your resume with a 3-5 sentence paragraph that highlights and summarizes your experience is a great way to pull in the reader. Use 3rd person and keep the information fact based, not just listing you are a ‘dedicated hard worker.’

Use Relevant Keywords and Action Verbs (Bullet Format)
Each job description calls for certain skills and the ability to hold/perform certain job responsibilities and duties. Using keywords with action verbs in your resume is often the best way to show that you have the experience they need. Bullets should start with the action verb followed by the explanation. Do not use “I” or list “responsible for” at each bullet, just start with the verb.

Define Key Accomplishments by Quantifying or Qualifying
Listing your keywords is not enough; you have to provide substance. What that means is you cannot expect results by putting your job description. Instead, add what impact you had on the company while doing your job. Some possible examples are: on-time projects, cost savings, improving process or team building. Another option would be giving numbers, like the size of your budget or the type of team you managed. By providing these details the company can see that you are a contributing employee and someone that can add value to their team.

Customize Each Resume to Align with Each Job
When applying to a job it is important your resume sells them on the fact you can do the job! It is almost impossible to have only one resume to be effective for all open positions. With that in mind, BEFORE you apply, look for what they want and compare that to your resume. Are they aligning? If not, (and you do have the experience) make sure it is clear that you CAN do the job. You have one shot to make an impression, sending a canned resume will not make an impression!

SUGGESTION: Print your Resume and Job Description
Distinguish the must have and preferred to haves on the description by highlighting in 2 different colors. Do the same with your resume. Compare both documents side by side. What is missing on your resume that you have and they are asking for in the description. EDIT your resume as needed, THEN send your resume to the company. *Only put what you have experience in, no fibbing!

2010 New Year’s Resolutions for Job Seekers

2010 New Year’s Resolutions for Job Seekers
By: Kristin Kane, Kane Partners

It’s a new year and new decade for a new you! What better a time then now to make a resolution to help you find a job in 2010... below you will find suggestions for goals and ideas to help keep you on track.

Like most resolutions just saying it a few times won’t work! You have to have some sort of plan or expectations of yourself along the way. You may say: “My Resolution is to find a new (or better) job for 2010.” Take it a step further by saying “and I will do this by…” and list your expectations of yourself on a daily and weekly basis to help you attain your goal. (For example: I will find one qualified company or job listing to present my resume, I will make 3 phone calls a day to network for a new job, I will evaluate my progress on a weekly basis and ask myself how can I improve. Most importantly, if I feel like I am getting nowhere I will ask for help!)

Here are a goals you can add to help you achieve success:

1. I will maintain a positive attitude at all times during the job search process.
2. I will keep my resume up-to-date and on target for each job I apply.
3. I will ask family, friends and former colleagues for suggestions on my job search and ask them to keep you in mind as they hear of opportunities.
4. I will not say “I will take anything” rather, I will remain focused on the types of work I prefer or can do.
5. I will expand my search radius or salary range to help open the door to new opportunities that I may have been missing.
6. I will not limit my search to “applying online for jobs” but make calls and network for opportunities on a daily basis.
7. I will integrate Social Media into my job search for 2010.
8. I will improve my research skills and knowledge of companies before each interview.
9. I will respond promptly to all communications with companies.
10. I will keep my skills fresh while searching for a job which might include: education, classes, certifications, volunteering, seminars etc.

In 2010 jobseekers need to be prepared to act quickly with their best foot forward! Make the improvements, set the goals and get started today, not tomorrow.

Tune in to NBC10 Philadelphia 12/30 for "Survive & Thrive" with Tracy Davidson at 5:30 where Kristin Kane will discuss "New Year's Resolutions for Job Seekers" with Tracy.

10 Resume Tips to Consider When Editing Your Resume

10 Resume Tips to Consider When Editing Your Resume
By: Kristin Kane, Kane Partners

1. Font and Size – Keep it consistent. 10-12 size, Arial and Times New Roman are most common.

2.
Details – Do not re-write your job description. Instead, incorporate your accomplishments and what value you added to the job description. Examples: cost savings of $x, meeting deadlines on time or ahead of schedule, implementing processes or procedures etc. What makes you different or unique?

3. Dates – Double check your dates to be sure they are accurate on your resume. Do not lie or misrepresent this in any way. It will cost you the job or offer. Using months and years are preferred.

4. Education – Clarify if you are degreed or ‘in process’ taking classes, note your major/minor and if you have a strong GPA consider including that as well.

5. Objective – Consider omitting the objective and replacing it with a summary or overview that sums up your experience and value added. Remember to keep this objective and factual, written in third person.

6. Customizing – Always review your resume before sending it to a company. If you know you are a fit for the role, your resume has to read that you can do the job. You may have to edit your resume to fit a job and ensure a call. Do not assume the person reading your resume knows what you do because of your job title. Remember an employer is looking to see what you can do for them!

7. Industry Terms/Acronyms – Each company/industry has terms/acronyms that are unique. Spell out the acronym first and define it if needed. For example if you are running a proprietary software database write that vs. just INLEX CRM. Do not miss an opportunity to link your skills and experience to the job description. Do not get lost in translation!

8. Approach – Write your resume for the job you want not the job you have. The resume is the vehicle to get you the interview the interview is what will get you the job.

9. Style – In today’s market the competition is fierce, making a well crafted resume is even more important. It should be easy to read locate skills, catch the attention of the reader and say “Pick Me.” Consider Bullets that begin with Action Verbs that explain your experience, most important/significant at the top. Add a skills section that pulls out keywords explaining your industry skills/exposure.

10. Spelling/Grammar – This is your first impression to potential employer. Grammatical errors, spacing, word use, spelling all are the most common mistakes on a resume. If you want to stand out don’t rely of spell/grammar check, get a second person’s opinion!

NBC10 BLOG POST by Kristin Kane of Kane Partners

"Job Seekers: Not getting the Callback/Interview"
By: Kristin Kane, Kane Partners Staffing Solutions

Today’s economic climate has had a huge impact on many people’s job search often leaving them with frustration and little results. With fewer jobs available and stiffer competition, many people asking the question… WHY? Why have I not received an interview or even a call back? I don’t get it… I can do the job!

Evaluating the question “WHY” is something every job seeker should do, especially in today’s economy. First one has to keep in mind the ‘job market’ has shifted, more people, less jobs which means you may/should have to change your strategy. Many job seekers have kept the same routine for job hunting and are expecting the same results as a few years ago.

Most people are equipped with a current resume, which is usually well written and aesthetically pleasing with only minor mistakes, spelling or grammatical. Unfortunately, the problem is the resume lacks real content, the key component to getting a call/interview. The ‘content’ is unique to each job seeker and a cookie cutter approach to a resume might not be the best strategy. A resume is not just your ‘job description’ but should include how you added value to the job. A well written resume may include: accomplishments, awards, cost saving measures, special projects, and/or what distinguishes you from the competition.

For those that are still not getting the call/interview… what now? First, I would suggest you pull up the job description and your resume. Does your resume actually say that you can do the job on paper? If not, this may be why you have not received a call. You do not appear qualified. Each company is looking for something different and you can’t assume they know you have done something because of your title. Be careful. There is a fine line between to much and not enough on your resume. Never lie or exaggerate on a resume. If you don’t have something do not put it. It’s grounds for immediate disqualification. Not sure how to phrase it, consult a professional. If you are applying to more then one type of job you should have more then one type of resume. It is the resume that will get you the interview or call back. If you haven’t spent the time or addressed what the company is looking for, especially in today’s economy, chances are you will end up in the ‘pass’ file.

Thanks to NBC10 I had the opportunity to help a job seeker, Alessandro, in a similar situation. It wasn’t until we actually sat down and went over his resume and the jobs he was applying to that we found what was missing. Go to AS SEEN ON NBC10 to view the story of Alessandro. Hopefully this will show job seekers a little elbow grease and editing of a resume can go a long way, especially in today’s economy! If you are having a similar problem or not sure why you might not be getting the call, help is out there. The current economy has slowed the hiring process and with the high unemployment rate the number of applicants has increased, therefore companies are slower to hire and more selective with a larger candidate pool. Remain positive and don’t be afraid to change your tactics to get seen.

As I like to say, it’s your resume that will get you the interview and the interview is what will get you the job. Your time and efforts should be invested in the resume!

FedEx to the Resume Rescue

Spruce up your résumé for FedEx’s free copies day
Posted Mar 06 2009, 12:18 PM by Joan Melcher Rating: Filed under: savings, free, save money, Joan Melcher

As the recession deepens and the stock market drops, some U.S. corporations are offering a helping hand to those most afflicted -- job seekers.

February job losses brought the nation’s unemployment rate to 8.1%, so there are plenty of people out there looking -- another 651,000 joined the jobless ranks last month, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

If you’re one of these people -- and even if you’re not -- you can get copies of your résumé made at the FedEx Office (formerly FedEx Kinko’s) store near you -- for free.

On Tuesday, March 10, all customers can have 25 résumés copied free during regular business hours at any FedEx Office Print and Ship Center. The one-day-only event is good for black-and-white copies and valid only for orders placed and picked up at the store. Orders may be submitted in printed format or as a digital file; copies will be printed single-sided.

“We understand that the economy has affected many people in a very profound way, and we want to help,” said Brian Philips, president and CEO of FedEx Office, in announcing the offer. “Printing résumés is one small way we can use our resources to help those who need it.”

Bravo!

To find the FedEx Office center closest to you, visit FedEx Office or call 1-800-Go-FedEx (1-800-463-3339).

New Year, New You

Welcome to 2009!

Get a head start on your career search. A few tips on how to approach your search:

1. Update your resume!
2. Apply to jobs that you are qualified for, do not apply everywhere. If you are looking for a career change write that in your cover letter, but make sure your resume is tailored to your relevant strengths of your career.
3. Track the company, job title and date you send your resume.
4. If you are working with recruiters ask that you know the company before you have your resume submitted. That will avoid duplicate efforts, this does not look good to the potential employer.
5. Be patient! It takes time to review resumes.
6. Be confident in yourself and your skill sets.
7. Point out your accomplishments and milestones in your career.
8. After an interview send a thank you!
9. Always be positive finding a new career can be job in and of itself. Take your time and remain positive.

Need a Job.... Call a Recruiter!

Its a rough & tough market today, lots of layoffs and lots of uncertainty. What do you do, who do you turn to?

Call a Recruiter!

1. Call Kane Partners if you specialize in IT, Engineering, Manufacturing/Production, Scientific, Executive/Management. If not research agencies that specialize in your area of experitse that cover the local region you are searching or willing to commute too. Just because an agency isnt in your town or state, does not mean they cant help you.

2. Once you find an agency contact them and send your current resume. Prior to the call make sure you have taken the time to update your resume and have it ready. Dont be afraid to ask if they have any advise or tips to help improve your resume.

3. GRAMMER GRAMMER - you would be suprised how many grammatical errors are on resumes, from spelling to punctuation to word use. Ask someone a family member, friend or neighbor to take a look at your resume, is it clear consise and without error.

4. Agencies are free to YOU! Companies pay the agencies to find the best people on the market, active and passive.

5. They help negotiable salaries and benefits packages, making sure you get the best possible offer with out loosing the deal.

6. They give you the back story of the company, the need, why its open, insight on who will be interviewing you and ultimately what to expect. Kane Partners will coach you prior to the interview so you are prepared when you walk in to be at your best.

7. Feedback. Because agencies are working with the agency you will be more likely to get timely feedback.

8. They know the market. Agencies are paid for their knowledge of the market and candidates. An agencies can best place you in a company and interview.

With all this in mind we strongly recommond you reach out to an agency to get a feel for the market, know the patterns and know how to position yourself so you can get the job and not loose out to someone else.

In today's market you have to play smart and get your resume to the right people not just reply to any ad online that "looks like it fits".

For more information call Kane Partners and we will be more then happy to help!!
